1st Annual Gypsum Hills Dual Sport ride. October 12-13 2019
« on: December 30, 2018, 07:21:13 PM »
We are making plans for a ride in the Gypsum Hills just west of Medicine Lodge, KS. So far it is only in the planning stage. Gary and I have rode 1 1/2 routes so far, a few came with us on your ride in Oct. We are trying to make it as much a off road ride as possible. There are easy routes around the Hills that I will post for others to ride. More info to come, if anyone has any input, please feel free to post here or contact me.
Marc

Sounds like a fun ride. I'll be there if it works for my schedule - October is always a little hairy around work.

Routes are almost done, should be a good time, if you have never been in this area, it is something to see. There is a lot of sand out this way, most of the dirt/sand is the red dirt stuff.

As for lodging there is the Copa/ budget Inn (620-886-5673) Cedar Cottage (620-886-0241).
Camping can be either the Barber fishing lake on the north end of the city or at City park at the east end of the city on highway 160.

I did a ride around the Gypsum Hills earlier this spring.  Make sure you plan a stop at Busters in Sun City for lunch.  It is one of my favorite out of the way places to eat in KS.

It's on my calendar.  Any hints on where the group is most likely to camp?

I'm going to be a motel bum on this adventure. We will haul in late Friday so I've booked at the Copa.
Sounds like a fun weekend.

Camping can be at the city lake on the north end of town. There are 2 bathrooms there, no showers. I’ll be in my RV at Rox RV park.
Good to have you Mike.

So, Becky "strongly dislikes sand"!! She was not going to attend this event. And then we bought her a new Tiger 800 XCa. She told me last night she is thinking of attending the event. BUT, while we are all out wrestling our bikes in the sand - she is going to ride the paved roads in the area.
I throw this out because there may be others that would like to ride the area but have this aversion to all the sand. If that's you hit a reply here and let's get an idea of who might be joining her on a paved road ride in the area.

I’m working on big bikes routes that are not sandy, or at least as little sand as possible. There are a few roads out there that aren’t sandy, so I’m sure you all will be fine.
