NMBDR June 26th - July 7th 2020

So my plan is to do the. NMBDR starting on May 17th to the 25th. Will ride down to dell city Texas spend the night and head north for the trip. I’ll be on my DL650 and hope to camp for maybe 2 to 3 days, then hotel it for a night. Ride ends at Antonio, Colorado. Headed back to Wichita.
The BDR is not a hard one but is the longest at 1200 miles.
Anyone is welcome to join me, if not I’ll do my normal and go alone.

At the moment, I'm going to plan on riding with you on this one! The BDRs look great, but I don't really fancy going out that far alone; just for safety reasons.

I'm trying to talk a buddy of mine into buying a 4x4 to do BDRs. He has a bad back and couldn't ride any kind of long distance, but he's done 'jeeping' before, and I think he'd have fun. Plus, chase truck for gear! :D

Whether or not he'll do it though, I have no idea.

Link and I did this ride last summer and it was the best ride I've ever been on.  As far as the technical aspect, it does have some sections that are definitely challenging in the national forest.  If it has rained before you get to the "White Sands" area, you'll have a slick time ahead of you there.  If you can swing it, book a night through AirB&B in Ramah, NM at the "Wild Sheep Place" .  The people there are awesome and the view out the back is one of the most memorable of the trip.

What kind of camping gear should I make sure that I have, besides the obvious tent & bedroll? I'll want a chair, which I don't have at the moment; but other than that I don't have a lot of camp equipment to go on the bike for like cooking, etc.

I'm not entirely certain how much camp cooking goes on on a ride like this, to be honest. If there's any at all I'm pretty sure I'll need a stove and kettle set, and some kind of coffee machine; a way to carry plenty of water, etc.

Specific suggestions appreciated!

I've been talking to my buddy who used to be into "jeeping". He's getting more and more interested in buying a 4x4 to go on BDRs (he can't ride because of back back injuries).

We're doing a mini-adventure this October, and if it goes well he's probably going to buy a 4x4 and he'll want to come too. Having a chase truck with tools, water, food, etc could make life a lot more comfortable out there :)

We had a great ride in the Jeep a few weekends ago, following the Kansas Adventure Route from Howard to Teeter Rock, handily covering all terrain except a large rock shelf on 515 road that the rental Jeep didn't have enough ground clearance to get over.

Results were excellent and Scott is completely onboard with joining us via 4x4 for the New Mexico BDR - especially after watching the NMBDR video I purchased at ridebdr.com :)

I'm hopeful that my knee will be better by the time we're ready to go for this adventure.

Hey y'all. Nick suggested I register on here and open up my big mouth, so here I am.

I'm Scott, his buddy with a bad back and the potential support vehicle operator.

As it stands now, we're definitely looking forward to joining in the BDR if possible, and it may be something my wife is interested in joining up to co-pilot with me.

Looking forward to meeting and greeting all of you and hearing suggestions/ideas for a good vehicle to look for in the future. For now, I'll most likely be renting a Jeep Wrangler Sahara that's equipped for light off-road use from the factory.

The Jeep we tested out in your home turf was a bone-stock Jeep Cherokee (2018) with all-season radials (15"). We barely had 6" of ground clearance, so I couldn't even deflate for better traction or anything - we were at the mercy of the 4wd system and it handled like a champ.

As Nick said, the only issue was a wash-out shelf that was just a touch too steep that I wasn't confident I wouldn't plant her on it and have to call for some help.

Good to see a few wanting to do this. Would like to have any and all that want to come along.
Only bad thing is due to me having a new job and not having very much time off work, I might have to either make it laster in the year or let someone else take this ride over till I can go.

I'm fine with later in the year - more time for my knee to heal up, anyways. Since it was your idea brought forth I would personally rather wait until you're set to go.

Due to the new job, Cessna doesn't give very much vacation time for new hires, so I will either have to postpone this ride till September, which for many is a busy month or plan on next year. Still want to do some of the local rides this year.  On a good note, it might allow me to do the west part of the OAT. I have it split up in 2, 3 day weekends. IF anyone wants I can start a new thread on it.
