June 9, 2018 Southern Flint Hills & Chautauqua Hills Tour
« on: February 22, 2018, 01:44:43 PM »
Rendezvous Point: Beaumont, KS

Kickstands Up: 9:00 am

Destination Points: Howard, Elk Falls, Quivira Scout Ranch, Sedan, Elgin, Cedar Vale, Grenola

Breakfast: Beaumont Hotel Cafe. Plan to be there by 8:00 am
Lunch: Sedan, KS ... several options

'Fuel Dumps' located in: Howard, Sedan, Cedar Vale

End Point: Grenola, KS. Riders from the west, north or south or east can depart for home from here. Grenola is a short distance from Beaumont if you have trailered-in for the rendezvous.

Make-Up Date: If weather is uncooperative, 6/16 will be the reschedule date.

Reference: See the 'Gallery Section' for past multiple rides into this area. http://backroadstouring.org/kansas/
This is a fabulous area to 'adventure tour' ...

Skill level: This is a scenic tour, where short stretches of pavement will be present, as well as long stretches of gravel and dirt. Off-pavement stretches will be run in the 40-50 mph range, road conditions permitting.

Group size: Limited. All riders should familiarize themselves with the roads in and out of the ride destinations. Maximum patrol size is twelve riders. If more riders show up, the group will split and a volunteer ride leader(s) will be needed. I volunteer to lead the first twelve attendees that arrive in Beaumont.

Ride Waiver: Is required. Download/save the waiver here: http://backroadstouring.org/downloads/waiver.pdf

Note ... current web browsers do not allow online completion of waiver form fields. Save the file locally and use Acrobat Reader or other PDF reader app to complete and print the form. Keep one form on your person, and give the other to your ride leader following the safety meeting in Beaumont.

Let's Ride! .... Roger

Have uploaded a map download to one of my web servers. It's a visual PDF with waypoints in sequential order, and the route running clockwise. If you look closely on the legend, this is a 1999 version of Delorme Street Atlas (Windows and Mac versions were available) .... and when we started the group in '01, we all agreed that it was the best you could get to find rural roads/locations and mark their GPS points. Unfortunately, after Garmin bought Delorme, this PC-based software was killed off. I still have one ancient Mac still capable of loading the program, thankfully!

The near ghost town of Elgin, at our southernmost point is a cool area to visit. Here's some pics/history: http://backroadstouring.net/elgin_090609/

Hope this ride can be part of your ride season! Best, Roger

I was really disappointed when Garmin bought Delorme, because they had some nice competitive software. I have just simply been using google earth to create tracks, they seem to work reasonably well, and it can save as GPX that seems to work properly with GPS devices. I can say it works right with Backcountry Navigator on my phone, but I don't have a hardware GPS.

Here's a Google Earth video, entering the Little Caney River valley from the north on Chautauqua County Rd. 19 and passing through the Quivira Scout Ranch. About 8.5 miles in length, the flyover terminates at County Rd. 22. We'll take a fuel/food rest stop in nearby Sedan, KS before proceeding to Elgin, KS on the OK border.

We're good to go. As we get closer to the date, will post any changes/mods to the route. Along the OK border, it is flood prone and road conditions could get greasy, so I'll be keeping a close eye on the weather and keeping all appraised here.

Long range weather forecast for Saturday is looking good .... so as of today, nothing has changed from the original plans.

If you're a "GO", you might confirm along this thread so that we've got an idea of numbers.

Lunch will be in Sedan. Hope you like BBQ .... http://www.bucksbbqsedan.com/

Last part .... be sure to read, The Golden Rule not once, but twice: http://www.backroadstouring.org/kansas/safety.htm

If anyone is riding out of Wichita for the Beaumont rendezvous, give me a shout if you want to ride together. We'll set a time and place for fueling and getting there.

I may take you up on this, Roger!  I'm following up with my unnoficial little brother to see what his plans are for Sat. If he can't get it off work to go blast some trails at Bogies, I'll be on this ride with ya!

Roger I am sorry I have to miss this event. My youngest son has been left out of the riding because he is 13. Larry has his birdfarm trail ride this weekend and Eli can go to that. So I have to take him. But I want to catch this ride next time. Thanks for hosting this!
There is absolutely no excuse for what I am about to do.
