2018 Stampede!
« on: October 02, 2017, 03:10:20 PM »
Thanks to Derek for making a great event happen without much assistance, and thanks to CMA for providing breakfast on Saturday!

While it's fresh in mind, I wanted to get some feedback for planning next years' event - I'm assuming everybody wants to have one next year?

Those of us interested in riding both the CMA Roads & Trails and Stampede events appreciated being able to ride both events. I know that's not everybody, but some people do; and we need to make sure to not overlap - but I did hear some comments about two weekends in a row being tough to swing for some folks.

So, let's work on having that not be back to back. I'm thinking one or more weekend gap.

Let's start with this, though:

Would you prefer Spring (May-June) or Fall (September-October)?

Thanks for starting this up, Nick!  Lets do October next year, temps will be a bit cooler, likelyhood of having some rain is higher.

Lets tentatively aim for 10/19/18 -10/21/18.  Does that overlap with the CMA?

I know there was a lot of talk at least with the campers about not only making this a bi-annual event but also getting a date set to reserve the Cabin. Apparently the cabin had been reserved for our weekend this year however, not one soul other than a day visit by an old gent and his dog.

Just sayun...

The city said it was reserved, not sure what to tell ya :)

First step in getting the cabin next year, is to get a date range in mind, and see if its available then. I'll call em and see what they say

No worries Derek, wasn't looking for an answer simply stating what was observed.
How about posting a link to this thread on the facebook page? I agree with handling it here on the site but I don't think all that many actually come browsing here.

Someone suggested doing the stampede twice a year. Can I offer this idea - Do the Stampede in the spring / early summer, then on the weekend after Labor Day CMA holds it's Roads and Trails Rally. We will hold the Kansas Roads and Trails event on September 7 - 9, 2018.

For those that attended, you know they are very much the same kind of events. If we do something like this then no one person is tasked with trying to plan two events. Whomever is involved with planning and executing one event can relax and ride the other event.

Just something to consider.

I have an idea for the spring, still working out the details. Sometimes there's a Stampede, and sometimes you have to do a Roundup8)

I'm thinking we should try to stay a few weeks +/- from Roads & Trails. I'd rather + than -, August can be pretty hot!

Kinda like this year where there was a mini Stampede (Roundup?) in spring then the main event in fall.
Personally I like the idea of having the main event being in the fall to close out the season and re-visit with all. A simple round up in spring to start the season off :)

Here's an offer that came through the Facebook 'Backroads Touring Kansas!' travel site .... a request from the American Motorcycle Assoc. concerning our Flint Hills Stampede.

http://backroadstouring.org/downloads/2018Stamp_AMA.zip

The above link is to a standard ZIP archive containing a sample registration in .xlsx Excel format and two informational PDFs. I've run the files through Webroot for bad stuff ... none there.

Have not responded, and am awaiting a discussion from the membership ...

Thanks, Roger

Roger- thanks for the heads up!

Wow, the AMA reached out to us, eh? I guess we must be doing a decent job! :)  I like the idea of being nationally sanctioned.. but it looks like there's a lot of additional cost that goes along with being a national.. both from the promotion side [sanction and insurance costs], and the riders side [ama membership req'd].

I dont know.. i know as a rider, I generally shy away from membership req'd rides.. and I know we have some folks here that don't want anything to do with the AMA.

So, in summary.. i don't know, haha..  being a national sounds cool, but it sounds like it might change the feel and vibe of the event.

Yeah I think maybe a few years back when Roger had a pretty dedicated crew that did a lot of leg work year round it might have been more feasible? Like Derek said it would be cool but could really complicate a fairly successful laid back event but that's just my opinion!! Let's hear what everyone thinks?

By the way, thanks for the forward on this Roger! What are your thoughts on it?

.......

By the way, thanks for the forward on this Roger! What are your thoughts on it?

Was reading through the specs ... the keeping of records/spreadsheets on every rider reminded me of past paid events. In other words, ugh.....

This year's Flint Hills Stampede went extremely well. Kudo to the organizers on a job well done!

For our organizer's next season, a much larger and national event might mean a quadrupling or more of personal time needed. That's quite a trade-off.

BTW ... have updated the 2018 ride waiver. It can be located here: http://backroadstouring.org/downloads/waiver.pdf

Some web browsers won't allow form completion online, but if you save the PDF and open with Adobe Reader or other standalone, you'll be able to complete and save the filled-out form.

Later .... R 8) ger

Agree 100% Roger!! Thank you for your feedback, I pretty much figured that would be your take after all the high maintenance years you've done it!! And thanks a bunch for updating the waiver form! I agree that especially considering the time and manpower that the 2017 Stampede was a huge success thanks mostly for sure to Derek and all the great people on this forum!!

Looks like the majority of folks would prefer the fall, I'm going to leave the poll up for a while so people have plenty of time to weigh in.

Has a 2018 date been set, so that calendars can be updated and winter prep can begin?

Thanks, R 8) ger
