KLR650 spokes
« on: May 10, 2017, 06:59:25 PM »
I was getting a little daunted by the cost of OEM spokes, but ended up finding that Moose Racing offers a full SET for around $70.

I bought some from an ebay seller out of Lee's Summit. I'll let ya'll know how they work out :)

Build your truing stand first!
Replace one spoke at a time and tension up as you go on the truing stand.  Do the busted ones first.
Make sure and measure the hub offset and check as you replace spokes.
If you have an air compressor, you can build a baking soda sand blaster on the cheap to clean the hub as you go.
Replace your wheel bearings while you are at it .

07 KLR 30K and it's still going strong.

Thankfully I was able to take advantage of dad's garage, he has a nice tire change stand and truing stand!

We got it all changed out... found that bolt cutters made taking the old spokes out a looooot easier  ;D

Truing wasn't as hard as I thought, though a bit tedious. I hope i've gotten it close enough, the lateral is +/- about 0.25mm to maybe 0.5mm; but the radial is +/- 1-2mm.

We couldn't get the balancing weights to stick, so it's definitely a bit out of balance.

A couple months later and still going well. The new spokes stayed in true and tight well, and I haven't had to re-adjust anything.

I'm pretty sure that I'll go ahead and do the front wheel over the winter as well, to get ahead of the game on that one.

Im glad it worked out for ya man!  I've trued up a couple bicycle wheels, and its pretty much the same thing. Seems pretty complicated, but once you get into it, its not too terrible. :)
