For some reason it wouldn't auto resize this shot, here's a screenshot of what I got for error message...

Ok, it did it again after doing all the descriptions and tags etc... Let me know what's going on, too much effort to only error out each time... I guess the first pic or two I posted were either smaller or something?

Yeah, right now there is a hard limit of 2500 pixels in either direction.  Your pic was 3500 wide.  I'll see what can be done.  Thanks for helping us find the problems!

Yeah I shoot most of my pix as large as I can with my iPhone so most of them will be too big, I just wanted to see if I needed to downsize prior to attempting since there is an auto resize in place... Just lil bugs, looking great!

OK, I've got the standard Gallery installed which doesn't do autoresize.  We'll have to update to the Pro version for $50.  We'll do that after we get the domain name in place because they tie it to the domain name.  In the meantime, I've allowed pix up to 4500 px in either dimention with a max size of 5mb.  We'll want to take it easy on the sizes because they will eat mobile data like crazy on uploads & downloads.
I set my phone to max resolution but the pix are automatically uploaded to Google Photos and resized.  When I want to post them somewhere, I just download from photos to my computer and they are ready to go.  Hmm, that gives me an idea.  I can send from my phone to facebook, which resizes and I think I can share facebook albums on SMF since my accounts are linked.  I'll have to try that.

Yeah we can't be hosting huge pictures, that's gotta have some effect over years on storage and such! I just hate resizing etc, I'll try to refrain from posting till we get auto resize in place, don't wanna muck up all the memory! LOL You know folks are gonna take advantage of our photo hosting, that's a HUGE plus on this new board!! Ease of use and uploading verbs having to have an external host to link to your posts.... love it...

I don't know what it is like to share photos from iCloud.  It used to be easy from Picasa Web but now that Google has switched to Google Photos it is tough to share them on external sites other than Facebook.

Another option is to use Coppermine Photo Gallery.  It isn't quite as seamless an integration but it is more sophisticated.  It does an automatic resizing and generates all kinds of nice views. It is a free option but it takes some work to make SMF and Coppermine look similar.

I keep so many on my phone and iPad I am typically just uploading from them to the post, super simple.... Choose file takes you right to the photo albums on my device, pick the picture and boom...

That is what we want.  People wont use it unless it is user friendly.  If we give people the best experience, we will be the forum everyone goes to first.
I used to have a woodworking forum which aggregated news and rss feeds from other woodworking sites.  It had a ton of visitors.  They didn't post much but it was the first site they would hit to see what was going on.

Yeah it's working beautifully for sure, and your right, that was one of the huge downfalls to posting in old forum but it had got so far behind you couldn't get to where we are here, love it!!! Once aut size is in place it will be an incredibly simple and pleasant experience!!

I shouldn't have any trouble keeping up with space, as long as we're not storing video locally, but some reasonable maximums should be there. Galleries full of 15-25mb pictures could get excessive, and is far more resolution than required for web sharing.

I agree that automatic resizing is a requirement, we can't expect people to resize their photos to post. They simply won't post photos if that's the case.

Exactly!! I know it has kept me personally from sharing on the old board for years, too many hoops to jump through and I'm certain I'm not alone! I truly believe that is a sizable factor in loss of participation on the forum unfortunately, make it easy and we LOVE to share!
