Ride Format - something that isn't follow the leader?
« on: February 04, 2018, 04:34:31 PM »
Last year, I went to Adventure Palooza with my dad and Mike Q absolute BLAST!

They used an app called Goosechase for the event, and the idea was that each team or small group of riders would navigate to the objectives on their own; then everybody ends up at the event HQ for dinner and spirited stories about the day.

I don't want to replicate their event (because honestly, I don't have the time), and the Goosechase app is expensive ($500 to host one game!).

However, I really thought the format of navigating to objectives and 'doing stuff' then meeting up at the end of the day could be something we do for a ride. I had referenced this as the "Roundup" in a post a while back - since we'd have to Round Up all the POIs!  ;D

I've been working on it here and there in some spare time, but I thought I'd ask everybody what their thoughts are before I put too many more hours in to it; I did find a similar (free as long as we're not charging an entry fee in our event) app called ActionBound.

How it works is that the Bound has stages, which can be done (or not done) in any order. Each stage and task has a point value. At the end of the day, the team with the most points wins!

Check out the sample bound I put together, or scan the attached QR code to launch it on your phone.

Is this something you'd be interested in as an event format?

I would not be "un-interested" that is for sure. But to honor and respect the ride format and effort that has been put into the Flint Hills Stampede for so many years I guess the best way I can put it. I have only been to one stampede. It took me a solid 20 minutes to figure out the ride leaders and veterans have put time and effort into this and have more than earned the respect of those in attendance. So, long as they respect and approve of  a new format. I will follow those guys all over the flint hills and try to keep up! A day riding in any format with good people, well we can all be so lucky!
There is absolutely no excuse for what I am about to do.

I think it would be fun!   Maybe  we could put something like this together for the summer?

Sounds cool to me!
I think it would be good especially breaking up in smaller groups (alike bikes and riders) combine resources and knowledge for a goal...Most times I have no idea how we got to all these cool places, I trust my leaders. The only GPS I have is google maps and my soggy nogin  ;D
I think it would help me at least learn some tech, build some bonds and have a great time.

I remember reading about that ride.  I like the idea of it, but whenever I start thinking about anything like this I stop.  Because I'm on computers all damn day long and if I have to plan out and mess with GPS and apps it turns in to no fun for me.  But go for it if you can get it rolling!

To be clear, an event like this doesn't replace the Stampede; it's a whole different thing with all the same dudes :D

I attended the Adventure Palooza last year with Nick. We had another buddy join us on our team and we all had a blast. Through the day as we were moving from waypoint to waypoint we encountered other teams. Some of them we already knew, others were new acquaintances. When we first started I thought, "Just how is this game going to work?" But it didn't take long at all to get the hang of it.
An example of one waypoint: "at this location what year was William Floyd born?" So, the waypoint has you at an old country cemetery. Mr. Floyd had the biggest headstone in the place so it was easy to find. You typed the date into the app and hit send. The organizer received it and verified the correct answer and your points were awarded. They also had "free" points for things like submitting a picture of someone on your team working on their bike. The event really was a hoot!

Thanks for the feedback guys. It sounds like there's probably enough folks out there who would be interested in this format to be worth the time investment to set up an event.
